Half Rater
The Trearddur Bay Half Rater fleet is one of the largest classic one design fleets racing in the UK, with over 30 boats at the club, we typically have around 25 boats racing in Cup Races. The boats are ideally suited to sailing in Trearddur and go well in most sailing conditions. On a light day you can race them with two on board and when it blows you can sail with five. They are very seaworthy and the highlight of our sailing calendar is the race to Holyhead and back. We even circumnavigate Anglesey in them. The Seabird Half Rater is the oldest one design class still sailing in Britain. It is a 20 ft carvel planked sailing boat, with a design dating back to 1898. To date there have been 106 built. The class has a Portsmouth Yardstick of 1100. The present day fleet is based in North Wales at Trearddur Bay and Abersoch and on the Mersey at Wallasey. 1979 saw recognition by the Guinness Book of Yachting that the Seabird Half Rater is the oldest OD Class still racing in Britain, and the Liverpool Maritime Museum hold the Association documents on loan.
